“Peer Observation as a Tool for Professional Teacher Development”
On June 1, 2024, at the Rosa Sensat space in Barcelona, an event was held to present the results of the research titled “Peer Observation as a Tool for Professional Teacher Development,” co-directed by David Duran (UAB) and Begoña De la Iglesia (UIB). This project, funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, was carried out by the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) in collaboration with the Competence Network of the Department of Education of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Department of Education of the Government of the Balearic Islands.
Special recognition and gratitude go to the participation of 572 teachers from both communities, who observed and were observed, providing all the information from the process and reflections derived from the feedback exchanged. During the day, six spaces for Communication of Results and Participant Reflections were developed:
Space 1: Impact of peer observation on teachers’ perception of collaboration, focusing on collaborative culture, collective agency, and attitudes towards collaboration.
Space 2: Overcoming resistance to peer observation, identifying resistance from both observers and those being observed, as well as demographic variables and perceived support.
Space 3: Professional proximity as a prerequisite for peer observation, including the increase in proximity and teachers’ interpretation of its effect on learning perception.
Space 4: Joint knowledge construction in peer observation feedback sessions, analyzing the types of feedback sessions and associated discursive moves.
Space 5: Characterization of quality feedback sessions in peer observation and predictive variables.
Space 6: Peer observation as a mechanism to identify professional improvement goals and promote the transfer to teaching practice.
Finally, the research website was presented: https://www.observacioentreiguals.com/blank, where all the results, reports, resources, guides, and products derived from the joint research can be found. We thank the participating teachers and researchers and hope that the shared results and documents contribute to professional teacher development.
